EastEnders has welcomed actor Max Murray to Albert Square as Joel Marshall, the son of Ross Marshall, who is in a relationship with Vicki Fowler — a character returning to the show after 21 years.
Joel’s arrival marks a new chapter for the BBC soap, as Vicki Fowler — previously portrayed by Scarlett Alice Johnson until her departure in 2004 — makes her long-awaited return, now played by Alice Haig. Her comeback follows the dramatic death of Martin Fowler during the soap’s 40th anniversary live episode.
But while fans are just getting to know Joel, many may not realise that Max Murray comes from acting royalty.
Who is Max Murray’s famous mum?
Max is the son of Gina Murray, a seasoned actress and singer whose work spans both screen and stage. Gina has appeared in popular TV shows including:
- Doctors
- Witless
- The Hunt for Raoul Moat
She also has an impressive stage résumé with performances in musicals like:
- Mamma Mia!
- Chicago
- Hairspray
Interestingly, Gina Murray even appeared in EastEnders back in 2014, playing Helen, a specialist who helped Carol Jackson during her cancer storyline.
Max expressed his excitement about joining the show:
“It’s an absolute privilege and honour to be joining such a wonderful production full of a lovely cast and crew. I’m really looking forward to introducing Joel to EastEnders viewers and telling his story.”
Famous Faces Run in the Family
Max isn’t the only newcomer with star-studded roots. Alice Haig, who now portrays Vicki Fowler, is the daughter of acclaimed actor and playwright David Haig — best known for his roles in:
- Four Weddings and a Funeral
- My Boy Jack
- The Thin Blue Line
- Killing Eve
- COBRA
David shares five children with his wife Julia Gray, who acts under the name Jane Galloway.
