A major fire broke out at an industrial estate on Maypole Crescent in Erith, prompting a significant emergency response as 25 fire engines and around 150 firefighters were deployed to the scene late Friday night.
The single-storey, open-fronted warehouse, which contained approximately 100 tonnes of mixed waste, was engulfed in flames. The fire also destroyed three diggers, four heavy goods vehicles, and 55 parked cars, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
There were no reports of injuries, and residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke that blanketed the surrounding area.
Extensive Firefighting Operation
The Brigade’s Control Officers received the first of 15 emergency calls at 10.47pm on Friday evening (12 July). Crews from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead, East Greenwich, Sidcup and other surrounding stations were immediately dispatched.
Key firefighting assets included:
- Three 32-metre turntable ladders, used for overhead water delivery and aerial surveillance
- One fire boat, mobilised from the Thames to assist with water supply
- The boat’s remote-operated monitors can pump 2,500 litres per minute
The fire was declared under control by 06:52 on Saturday morning, though crews remained at the scene throughout the day to douse smouldering pockets of waste.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne praised the efforts of firefighters, saying:
“Our crews worked hard throughout the night at a large fire on an industrial estate in Erith. While the fire was under control early Saturday morning, we continued to tackle some areas of waste material that were still alight throughout the day.
“The estate and nearby roads were closed, and we advised residents or those who work at the site to avoid the area.”
