In a landmark ruling, Mohyeddin-Ahmed Ibrahim, a 27-year-old man with no fixed abode, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of two women. The verdict was delivered on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Manchester Crown Court.
The disturbing incidents occurred in June and August 2020 in Manchester, shaking the local community. The first incident took place after a woman attended a birthday party at an address on Rochdale Road. Having stayed overnight, she awoke to the horrifying experience of non-consensual sexual intercourse. Despite her repeated attempts to stop Ibrahim, both physically and verbally, he callously continued to assault her.
Initially, the survivor did not immediately report the incident to the police. However, after speaking with her family, she was encouraged to come forward. The second incident occurred two months later at the same address. Following a conversation over social media, Ibrahim visited the woman’s home, bringing alcohol with him. The victim recalls waking up in the night with her clothing disheveled. On two subsequent occasions, she caught Ibrahim in the act and confronted him about his actions.
It was only after confiding in a friend the following morning that the survivor learned about another woman who had experienced a similar ordeal. Together, they made the brave decision to contact the authorities. On Friday, August 21, 2020, their reports were filed with the police.
While the forensic window for examination had unfortunately passed for the first incident, the second survivor was able to provide her clothing for examination. She also underwent a forensic examination at St Marys Referral Centre, providing crucial evidence to support her case.
Ibrahim, who also goes by the name Jamal, was swiftly apprehended by Greater Manchester Police on the same day the reports were filed. Samples were taken, and his phone and clothing were seized as evidence.
Detective Sergeant Sam Owen of Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester North district commended the courage of the survivors, who provided vital evidence to secure Ibrahim’s conviction. Despite his persistent claims of innocence, the court found him guilty of these heinous crimes.
DS Owen expressed his hope that the sentence would aid the survivors in their personal healing process. He also emphasised the importance of sending a resolute message to the public that the police will tirelessly pursue all available leads to ensure justice for victims of serious sexual assaults.
Addressing the community, DS Owen stressed that tackling violence against women and girls remains a top priority for the police force. He urged any victims to come forward, assuring them that the police would provide the necessary support.
