A man who fatally stabbed his 63-year-old uncle in a village near Exeter has been sentenced to a hospital order under the Mental Health Act after admitting manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
Corin Harper-Davis, 37, of Hither Green, London, appeared at Exeter Crown Court today where he was sentenced for the killing of his uncle, Jonathan Harper, at a property in Brampford Speke on 31 July 2024.
Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a man in cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of first responders and medical professionals, Mr Harper was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed he had suffered four stab wounds, one of which was fatal.
The court heard how Harper-Davis had been experiencing a serious decline in his mental health in the months leading up to the attack, with witnesses and medical experts confirming he was suffering from a psychotic illness at the time. His uncle had travelled to the property to support him, but without warning or provocation, Harper-Davis turned violent after they returned from a shopping trip.
Following the attack, Harper-Davis fled the scene but was arrested at a nearby property.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility earlier this year on 30 January.
Today, Judge Anna Richardson imposed a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act, alongside a Section 41 restriction, meaning Harper-Davis will be detained indefinitely in a secure mental health facility. He has been held in such a facility since October 2024.
‘A truly tragic case’
Detective Inspector Guy Biggar, Senior Investigating Officer with Devon and Cornwall Police, said:
“This is a truly tragic case, and I would like to pass on my thanks and condolences to Jonathan’s partner and son, both of whom have shown real bravery and compassion at an incredibly difficult time.
“I would also like to thank the wider Harper family for their support throughout the investigation and the residents of Brampford Speke who acted swiftly and responsibly in assisting both the victim and the suspect until police arrived.”
Jonathan Harper was remembered by family and community members as a kind and caring man, deeply committed to helping his nephew through a challenging time.
