A man who subjected his ex-partner to years of horrific abuse, violence, and controlling behavior has been sentenced to 22 years in prison following a trial at Leicester Crown Court.

The victim endured extreme physical and emotional abuse over a nine-year relationship, which included false imprisonment, sexual assault, stalking, coercive and controlling behavior, rape, and repeated acts of violence. The abuse came to light after the victim split from the defendant in March 2024 and contacted police, fearing for her safety.

A Campaign of Abuse

The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which included incidents of severe physical violence and sexual assault. Notable incidents included:

• 2017: The defendant hit the victim’s knee with a guitar, causing a serious injury.
• 2018: While pregnant, the victim was tied to a radiator for two days, beaten, and spat on.
• 2019: The victim was attacked while holding her baby, suffering severe injuries after refusing to comply with the defendant’s demands.
• 2020: The defendant punched, strangled, and threatened the victim during a middle-of-the-night assault.
• 2021: While heavily pregnant, the victim was pushed down the stairs and subjected to further violence.

Despite earlier reports to police, the victim had not initially disclosed the full extent of the abuse due to fear and manipulation.

Arrest and Conviction

After the victim finally reported the full extent of her experiences in May 2024, the defendant was arrested and charged with 15 offences. In November 2024, a jury found him guilty on all counts. On January 13, 2025, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison, with an additional three years on license following his release.

Police Praise Victim’s Courage

Detective Constable Nathan Martin of Leicestershire Police’s Signal unit described the case as one of the most disturbing he had encountered. He praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward, stating:
“The level of violence in this case was on another level. The defendant was determined to control the victim, showing no regard for her physical or mental wellbeing.”

Police urged victims of abuse to come forward, emphasizing the support available for those in danger. A range of agencies, including Juniper Lodge and other Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), offer free and confidential assistance to victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse.
