Damon Tingay, a 30-year-old man from Grimsby, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after committing disturbing and depraved acts in a mortuary. The case, which shocked the local community, involved sexual offences against deceased bodies.
The Incident
On Sunday, March 17, at approximately 04:30 BST authorities received a call reporting a break-in at the mortuary of Diana Princess of Wales Hospital. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they apprehended Tingay on suspicion of burglary. During a subsequent search of the facility, it was discovered that several bodies had been disturbed.
Unsettling Discoveries
CCTV footage revealed that Tingay had engaged in sexual acts with two of the deceased bodies. The nature of his actions was described as "depraved, perverted, and utterly grotesque" by the sentencing judge. Senior Investigating Officer DCI Nicole Elliott expressed her shock at the case, emphasising the impact on the deceased’s families, mortuary staff, and the wider community.
Lack of Explanation
While in custody, Tingay could offer no explanation for his actions. The investigation prioritised treating the deceased with dignity and respect, in line with their families’ wishes. Support was provided to those affected by this disturbing incident.
Tingay pleaded guilty to trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and sexual penetration of a corpse. His sentence includes six years of custodial time and an additional four years on an extended license. He has been deemed a dangerous offender and will be subject to sex offender notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely.
