Firefighters in Charlton recently executed a dramatic rescue operation to save a man trapped in a collapsed trench at a construction site.

The incident unfolded as our specially trained Urban Search and Rescue crews, alongside other operational colleagues, swiftly responded to the emergency. Upon arrival at the scene, the firefighters immediately began efforts to excavate sand and clay from the trench, aiming to increase access and rescue the trapped individual while also stabilizing the area to prevent further collapse.

The call for assistance came in at 12:29 pm, and Fire crews tirelessly worked at the site until 6:47 pm, successfully completing the operation. Throughout the rescue mission, our firefighters collaborated closely with the London Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team, ensuring coordinated medical care for the trapped man.

Once freed from the trench, the rescued individual was promptly transported to the hospital by paramedics for further medical attention. Responsibility for the scene was then transferred to the Metropolitan Police Service and the Health and Safety Executive for further investigation and evaluation.

This successful rescue operation was made possible by the commendable efforts of our firefighters from East Greenwich, Eltham, Bethnal Green, and neighbouring fire stations.
