David Perry, a resident of Eyston Drive, Weybridge, Surrey, has pleaded guilty to sending abusive and threatening communications to Member of Parliament Angela Rayner. The plea was made today at Westminster Magistrate’s Court, following an investigation conducted by Greater Manchester Police as part of Operation Octant.
Perry is scheduled to be sentenced at Staines Magistrates on Thursday, November 16, 2023, after pleading guilty to sending a message that was grossly offensive, indecent, obscene, and menacing in nature.
On May 2, 2022, Perry sent an abusive email to Rayner, who serves as the Shadow Deputy Prime Minister. The email contained derogatory remarks aimed at the MP, including insulting remarks about her appearance and personal attacks on her abilities and qualifications.
Detective Inspector Christopher Dean of GMP’s Tameside CID expressed his disapproval of such abusive and threatening communication, emphasising that it is unacceptable and has a detrimental impact not only on the victim’s life but also on those close to them. The abusive correspondence sent to Rayner caused her significant distress, prompting a thorough investigation to identify the sender. Dean hopes that Perry’s guilty plea and the subsequent sentencing date serve as a clear demonstration that such actions have consequences.
Dean further warned the public that what may seem like a harmless email can result in a criminal conviction. He assured that law enforcement will always take robust action against individuals who engage in abusive behavior.
The Greater Manchester Police encourages anyone who has been a victim of or witnessed a hate crime to report it as soon as possible. Reports can be made online or through the LiveChat service available on the GMP website.
