A horrifying attack aboard a Merseyrail train between Hunts Cross and Ormskirk has left a man with a severed ear lobe and life-altering injuries, prompting an urgent investigation by British Transport Police (BTP). Detectives are appealing for help from the public to identify several individuals captured on CCTV who may hold crucial information about the incident.
The violent altercation unfolded at approximately 10:50pm on Thursday, 14 March, and involved two groups of men whose verbal dispute escalated into a vicious physical confrontation. BTP confirmed that during the attack, one man’s ear lobe was bitten off, causing permanent disfigurement.
CCTV Images Released
In a bid to track down those responsible, police have released CCTV images of several men they wish to speak to in connection with the incident. A BTP spokesperson said:
“We are appealing to anyone who may recognise the individuals in the CCTV images to come forward. This was a shocking and violent incident which left a man with significant and permanent injuries.”
Passengers on board the train were left traumatised by the scenes, which took place on a service that is commonly used by commuters and late-night travellers between Liverpool and Lancashire.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact them immediately, quoting reference 795 of 14 March. Officers say even minor details may help identify those involved.
While the motive behind the assault is still unclear, the brutal nature of the incident has sparked concerns about the safety of public transport during evening hours. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Public Reassurance and Call for Information
The BTP has since increased patrols on Merseyrail services to reassure the public and maintain safety across the network. Authorities have also encouraged anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have relevant mobile footage to get in touch.
Those with information can contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40. Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
As the investigation continues, police are determined to bring those responsible to justice and prevent similar violent outbreaks on the UK’s railways.
