Harry Owusu-Manu, residing in New Kent Road, Southwark, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years for a series of heinous crimes, including attempted murder, aggravated arson, and religiously aggravated stalking.
The 39-year-old was found guilty on February 23 of two counts of attempted murder, aggravated arson with intent to endanger life, religiously aggravated stalking, and possession of a lock knife in a public place. These charges stem from a horrific incident that unfolded over several weeks, culminating in a devastating act of violence against his former partner.
Detective Constable Megan Gittins, who led the investigation, described Owusu-Manu’s behaviour as making his ex-partner’s life a “misery.” His relentless harassment escalated from posting derogatory and Islamophobic content on social media to attempting to murder his ex-partner, her young daughter, and her unborn child.
The terrifying ordeal reached its climax when Owusu-Manu set fire to his ex-partner’s flat in Battersea during the early hours of April 25, 2023. The victim, who was deaf and pregnant at the time, along with her young daughter, narrowly escaped the flames but suffered from smoke inhalation. The fire, started deliberately by Owusu-Manu, destroyed the victim’s home and belongings.
Despite attempts to cover his tracks, detectives swiftly identified Owusu-Manu as the perpetrator. CCTV footage captured his distinctive orange van arriving at the scene minutes before the fire. Further evidence, including dashcam footage from the van, led investigators to uncover Owusu-Manu’s meticulous planning of the attack.
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, the victim expressed gratitude to the London Fire Brigade for their swift response and emphasized the profound impact the incident has had on her and her family’s lives. She commended the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their dedication to bringing Owusu-Manu to justice.
Owusu-Manu’s callous actions have not only endangered lives but shattered the sense of security and safety of his victims. As he begins his lengthy prison sentence, his former partner remains resilient, determined to rebuild her life and find happiness once again.
