Man Jailed for Brutal Assault on Baby, Causing Lifelong Brain Damage
A man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for repeatedly punching a baby in the head, leaving the infant with permanent brain damage. Jordan Cattell, 25, from Selbourne Road in Handsworth, was convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent for the assault that took place in Walsall in 2018.
The 10-month-old baby was lying in his cot when Cattell inflicted multiple skull fractures and caused haemorrhaging. Despite surviving the horrific injuries, the child now requires full-time care due to the disabilities sustained from the attack.
The sentencing took place at Wolverhampton Crown Court, where the severity of the baby’s injuries and the impact on his life were highlighted.
Cattell’s Claims Rejected
When initially questioned by officers, Cattell claimed that the baby had fallen over. He pleaded not guilty to the charges but was ultimately convicted after a thorough investigation and trial.
Det Con Lucy Simpson from West Midlands Police expressed relief at the verdict: “This was an upsetting case, particularly as it has such a long-lasting effect on the victim, at the time a small, innocent baby. The sustained injuries have impacted the victim’s life, leading to lifelong disabilities.
Long Road to Justice
Det Con Simpson also emphasized the effort involved in bringing the case to court: “It has taken years of hard work to bring this case to court and I’m glad Cattell has been put behind bars for a significant period of time.
The investigation and trial process highlighted the dedication of the police and legal teams in seeking justice for the young victim and his family. The sentencing serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of children and the severe consequences of violent acts against them.
