Man jailed following a police pursuit in Cranleigh
A man is behind bars after being sentenced for dangerous driving following a police pursuit in Cranleigh in April this year. 26-year-old Jamie Jayson Cansell of Ashbury Crescent, Guildford, was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment for driving offences and failing to provide a sample for analysis. He has also been banned from driving for three years and eight months, his driving record has been endorsed, and he will have to take an extended driving test. Cansell was spotted driving a black Fiat Punto erratically and at excessive speed at around 3am on 2 April in Cranleigh. He failed to stop for police when requested to do so. Officers pursued the Fiat Punto for around 17 minutes on the roads around Cranleigh and Bramley. Tactical pursuit and containment tactics were used to stop the vehicle, with a tyre deflation device being deployed three times before the car finally came to a halt and Cansell was taken into custody. No-one was injured as a result of the pursuit. Cansell pleaded guilty to one count of driving dangerously, one count of driving otherwise than in accordance with a license, one count of using a vehicle without third party insurance and one count of failing to provide a sample for analysis at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on 10 May. He was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on 7 June. Sergeant Gary Lefort of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Cansell’s driving on the night in question was extremely dangerous, and it is fortunate that nobody was hurt as a result of his actions. “Driving recklessly puts everyone on the road at risk, not just the driver. Thanks to the hard work of officers, Cansell will now be held accountable for his behaviour and will be unable to return to the roads until he has proven himself safe to do so”
