A 23-year-old man from Lyneham has been found guilty of raping a teenager in a Swindon car park, following a trial at Swindon Crown Court.
Attack in Old Town Car Park
The court heard that Rooney Gardi, of Calne Road, Lyneham, raped an 18-year-old in the early hours of June 30, 2024, in a car park on Dammas Lane.
The young victim was found unconscious by members of the public, with injuries to her face and body and no memory of the last few hours. Her underwear was missing, and she was later examined by police and medical experts.
Police Praise Victim’s Strength and Public Response
Speaking after the verdict, Detective Constable Anna McCormack from Wiltshire Police CID described Gardi as a “sexual predator” who had taken advantage of a vulnerable young woman.
“Gardi admitted sexual contact but denied the more serious charge,” she said.
“He took advantage of a young girl who was vulnerable.
She praised the victim’s strength and courage throughout the investigation, despite her inability to recall the incident.
“I also want to thank the members of the public and the community wardens who initially attended to the victim. Their quick thinking in contacting the police and protecting the scene ensured crucial evidence was preserved.”
Sentencing Date Set
Gardi has been remanded in custody and is set to be sentenced on April 14.
Police Urge Victims to Come Forward
DC McCormack reassured the public that police take sexual violence seriously, urging anyone who believes they have been a victim to seek help, even if they cannot remember all the details.
“People should be able to enjoy a night out without fear of violence,” she added.
“If you believe you have been the victim of sexual assault, please know that we will fully investigate.”
