A tragic incident unfolded on the coast of South Tyneside when a man’s vehicle plunged off a cliff edge. Northumbria Police confirmed the death after being called to the scene at Marsden Grotto in South Shields.
The Incident
At approximately 11.45pm on Thursday, June 6, emergency services responded to a report of concern for the safety of a man whose vehicle had left the A183 Coast Road and continued over the grassed area adjacent to the road. Tragically, the vehicle fell from the cliffs, resulting in serious injuries to the driver.
Rescue Efforts
A search and rescue operation was swiftly launched, involving various teams, including the RNLI lifeboat service and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. Photos from the scene depict a crumpled black car washed up on jagged rocks at the base of the cliff.
Investigation
Northumbria Police later confirmed that the man had been found dead inside the car. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and there is no indication of third-party involvement. Authorities are preparing a report for the coroner.
