A 23-year-old man, Serge Kelly, residing at Upper Mullaghamore, Cliffony, Co Sligo, has been charged in connection with a tragic hit-and-run incident in Co Donegal last weekend, which claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy. Kelly appeared before Carrick-on-Shannon District Court to face charges related to the incident.

Detective Garda Shane Maye, stationed at Ballyshannon Garda Station, presented evidence of the arrest, charge, and caution of Mr. Kelly during the court proceedings. According to Detective Garda Maye, Kelly was charged at 19.15 IST on the previous evening at Ballyshannon station.

The charges against the accused stem from a hit-and-run collision that occurred on Atlantic Way, Bundoran, on Saturday evening, resulting in the tragic death of Ronan Wilson, a nine-year-old boy from Kildress in Co Tyrone. The young boy was visiting the town when he was struck by a vehicle.

Serge Kelly is now facing multiple charges under the Road Traffic Act, including failing to stop at the scene of the crash, failing to remain at the scene, and failing to offer or seek assistance.

During the court proceedings, Kelly was granted bail after €2,000 in cash was provided to the court, along with an additional independent surety of €5,000. The bail conditions stipulate that he must sign in at Ballyshannon Garda Station three times a week. Furthermore, he is prohibited from making any form of contact, either directly or indirectly, through social media or any other means, with prosecution witnesses. Additionally, he is required to surrender his passport.

Mr Kelly will appear before Ballyshannon District Court on October 20, 2023.
