A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder as police continue to investigate the fatal explosion that destroyed a house in Worksop over the weekend and claimed the life of 53-year-old David Howard.
Emergency services were called to John Street at 7.39pm on Saturday, 12 April, following reports of a major explosion that completely levelled a terraced home and caused damage to surrounding properties. A major incident was declared as firefighters, police, and paramedics raced to the scene.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Mr Howard was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin are being supported by specially trained officers.
Arrest Made in Ongoing Investigation
As part of their inquiries, Nottinghamshire Police arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He has since been bailed pending further investigations into the cause of the explosion.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, who is leading the investigation, said:
“Our thoughts remain with David’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.
“Whilst we have made an arrest, I want to be really clear that our investigation remains at a very early stage and we are doing everything possible to establish what caused this deeply tragic incident.
“It remains too early to say whether there is a criminal element to this case and I would ask that people avoid speculation.”
Cause of Explosion Still Unclear
The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, with police maintaining an open mind as forensic teams and structural engineers continue to examine the scene. A cordon remains in place around John Street, and the area is expected to be secured for several more days.
Residents in the surrounding area have described the blast as “like a bomb going off,” with some reporting that the shockwave shook nearby houses. Emergency services helped evacuate dozens of residents, with many seeking temporary refuge at local community centres or staying with friends and family.
