A man has been arrested following a violent altercation at Westfield Stratford shopping centre that left a security guard injured on Friday evening.
The incident occurred near one of the entrances of the popular shopping centre at around 7:30pm on 21 February. Police were called to the scene after reports of a disturbance involving a member of Westfield’s security staff.
Officers arrived to find the security guard suffering from minor injuries after reportedly being assaulted during an altercation. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as crowds gathered around the scuffle, with some bystanders shouting “stop it” while the guard lay on the ground.
A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of actual bodily harm (ABH). He has since been released on police bail as investigations continue.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, stating: “Around 7.30pm on Friday, 21 February, police attended Westfield Stratford City following reports that a man had assaulted staff at a shop. One staff member suffered minor injuries. A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of actual bodily harm. He has been released on police bail pending investigation.”
Westfield Stratford has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
The shopping centre, one of London’s busiest retail hubs, was filled with evening shoppers at the time, with many reportedly shaken by the public altercation.
