A significant fire broke out in the engine room of a ship at Sheerness Docks on Thursday evening (24 October 2024), prompting a large-scale emergency response. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was alerted to the incident at 7:31 pm, and crews worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.
Ten fire engines and a height vehicle were dispatched to the scene, along with KFRS’ Volunteer Response Team. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, successfully extinguished the flames. Partner agencies, including Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb), also responded to the emergency.

One individual was airlifted to hospital due to injuries sustained during the fire. The condition of the patient has not yet been confirmed. Authorities have stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire was declared under control at 2:40 am on Friday, 25 October, with emergency services continuing to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the area. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is currently underway.
