A major emergency response is underway this afternoon (Friday, May 30) following reports that two people have entered the River Thames near Royal Pier Terrace in Gravesend.
At approximately 1.46pm, officers were called by the Port of London Authority (PLA) to concerns for the welfare of two individuals seen entering the water near Royal Pier Road.
Multi-Agency Response
Emergency crews, including Kent Police, the RNLI, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene. A number of police cars and a van cordoned off Commercial Place, while officers stationed along the river from Royal Terrace Pier to Town Pier have been seen actively scanning the water.
Eyewitnesses report the presence of four vessels on the river, including police boats and RNLI lifeboats, with searches concentrating on the area near the Port of London Authority’s Gravesend offices.
A spokesperson for Kent Police said:
“Officers, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the RNLI and South East Coast Ambulance Service are currently at the scene where enquiries and a search are underway.”
RNLI Deployed
The Gravesend RNLI lifeboat crew confirmed they were tasked shortly before 2pm by HM Coastguard to support the police-led operation and are continuing to assist at the scene.
