A major fire at a recycling site in Crete Hall Road, Northfleet, has prompted urgent public health warnings as heavy smoke continues to affect Gravesend town centre and parts of Tilbury in Essex.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Monday 26 May at around 2:08am, has required a large-scale response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, with up to six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a command support unit deployed at the scene.
Public Health Warning in Effect
As of 8:10pm on Tuesday, 27 May, fire crews remain at the scene and are continuing to urge residents and those travelling through the affected areas to keep windows and doors closed due to a large plume of smoke.
The smoke is not only impacting Gravesend but also reaching across the Thames to Tilbury, within the Thurrock district of Essex. Authorities have advised residents in both areas to take precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions or young children.
A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said:
“Crews are making good progress in extinguishing the flames, but due to the volume of smoke, residents are advised to keep their homes sealed and avoid outdoor exposure. This advice remains in effect until further notice.”
Ongoing Firefighting Efforts
Firefighters have been working in rotation for over 40 hours, using main hose jets, ground monitors, and positive pressure ventilation fans to battle the blaze.
The Environment Agency is also involved due to the environmental risks posed by the recycling site materials. The cause of the fire is not yet known and will be investigated once it is fully under control.
Crews expect to remain on site for at least another 24–48 hours as they monitor hot spots and ensure full extinguishment.
Public Urged to Share Warnings
Kent Fire and Rescue is urging the public to share this information with neighbours and vulnerable individuals who may not have access to the internet.
