A large fire erupted at a recycling facility on Weir Road late on Saturday, September 7, prompting a major response from the London Fire Brigade. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were deployed to the scene to contain the blaze, which caused widespread concern among local residents.
The fire broke out at approximately 10:26 PM and rapidly engulfed a single-storey building at the recycling facility, destroying a substantial amount of domestic waste stored on the premises. The London Fire Brigade’s control centre received 46 calls from concerned residents, leading to an immediate and extensive response.
Station Commander Matt Gregory, who oversaw the operation, advised local residents to remain indoors with their windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke in the area. This is likely to be a protracted incident with our firefighters working to damp down deep-seated pockets of fire throughout the day,” Gregory stated.
Firefighters worked through the night and brought the fire under control by 7:34 AM on Sunday morning. However, crews remained on-site for an extended period to ensure that all hotspots were fully extinguished and to prevent any potential flare-ups.
Local authorities urged residents in the affected area to stay informed through official updates from the London Fire Brigade and to follow any necessary safety instructions.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Further developments are expected as authorities continue to assess the damage and ensure the site is secure.
