Drivers in Maidstone are being warned of major disruption as urgent gas network repairs force the closure of Loose Road (A229) until Sunday, 1 June.
Southern Gas Networks (SGN) announced that their engineers, working with Kent County Council and contractor WCB Utilities, are urgently replacing deteriorating gas mains along Loose Road and Cripple Street. Following multiple previous repairs, investigations revealed the pipes were in poor condition, prompting the decision to install new, longer-lasting plastic piping.
Work began on Tuesday, 6 May, with teams working extended hours, and an additional team joining on Monday, 12 May. Temporary traffic lights and potential additional road closures will be used to ensure the safety of engineers and the public.
Access will be maintained for residents and businesses at controlled points, but drivers are urged to follow signed diversion routes and avoid smaller roads unsuitable for heavy traffic. Bus routes are also affected, with passengers advised to check with operators directly.
SGN apologised for the disruption, emphasising that the new gas main has a lifespan of around 80 years, promising a long-term benefit for residents and businesses once work is complete.
