The M4 motorway has been shut in both directions following the discovery of human remains on the carriageway between Junctions 20 (Almondsbury Interchange) and 21 (Awkley), causing significant disruption for motorists in the area.
Avon and Somerset Police were called to the scene at approximately 6:40 PM after multiple drivers reported seeing “something on the road.” Upon arrival, officers confirmed the tragic discovery of human remains scattered across the busy motorway.
In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “Enquiries are underway to identify the deceased and notify next of kin. An investigation is ongoing to establish how the person came to be on the motorway. The road is expected to remain closed into the early hours of Sunday, February 23.”
The closure has resulted in heavy traffic, with National Highways implementing diversions around the scene to ease congestion. The affected stretch of the M4 runs between the Prince of Wales Bridge and Junction 20 at Almondsbury, with multiple link roads also closed to manage traffic flow.
Diversions and Closures:
- The M48 is closed between the M4 and Junction 1 near the Severn Bridge.
- The link from the M5 at Junction 15 (southbound) to the M4 Junction 20 (westbound) is closed.
- The link from the M5 at Junction 16 (northbound) to the M4 at Junction 20 (westbound) is also shut.
National Highways confirmed that diversions are in place, but long delays are expected as drivers are rerouted around the closure. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible and allow for extra travel time.
A spokesperson from National Highways stated: “We are working closely with Avon and Somerset Police as they conduct their investigation. We urge drivers to follow diversion routes and to be patient as emergency services continue their work.”
Traffic cameras have shown long queues forming near the closure points, with some drivers reporting being stationary for over an hour. Many commuters took to social media to express their frustration and concern over the tragic incident.
