Drivers using the M25 Dartford Crossing are bracing themselves for significant disruptions this weekend as the QEII Bridge is scheduled to close for essential maintenance works. The closure, expected to last for seven hours each night, is likely to cause chaos for commuters and travellers alike.

The closure will occur between 10pm and 5am on both Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25, affecting traffic flow in the region. During this time, motorists are urged to stay updated with the latest travel advisories and to plan alternative routes carefully.

While the west-bore tunnel will remain open for northbound traffic heading into London, a contraflow diversion will be implemented through the east-bore tunnel to facilitate southbound traffic from Essex to Kent.

The closures are part of ongoing maintenance plans by National Highways, initiated last summer, to ensure the safety and reliability of the Dartford Crossing. Repair works have been focused on the bridge’s ventilation systems, drainage, steelwork, and pipework, as well as various electrical and structural components.

National Highways emphasized the importance of these maintenance efforts in maintaining safe and efficient journeys for road users. The extensive repair program, conducted primarily overnight between 10pm and 6am, aims to minimize disruption to traffic while addressing critical infrastructure needs.

The Dartford Crossing, a vital transport link connecting the M25 London Orbital Motorway, sees over 50 million vehicles annually and plays a crucial role in the region’s transportation network. Despite its capacity to handle 135,000 vehicles per day, it often exceeds this threshold, especially during peak periods, underscoring the necessity of regular maintenance and upgrades.

Drivers are reminded of the toll charges associated with using the Dartford Crossing, which range from £2.50 for cars, motorhomes, and minibuses to a minimum of £3 for buses, coaches, vans, and goods vehicles. Failure to pay the toll promptly may result in fines of up to £105 per crossing.
