The M23 motorway near Gatwick Airport is currently closed in both directions following a serious multi-car crash earlier this morning.
Emergency services, including air ambulance crews, rushed to the scene after reports of a four-car collision, leading to traffic being brought to a standstill on the northbound carriageway. The closure also impacted the southbound carriageway as the air ambulance landed to attend to the injured.
A spokesman for National Highways confirmed the closure, stating, “The M23 is closed northbound between Junction 9 near London Gatwick Airport and Junction 8 near the M25 due to a collision. Surrey Police Traffic Officers are on scene.
While the southbound carriageway has since reopened, significant delays are expected as traffic queues stretch for several miles in both directions. A diversion route has been established to manage the flow of vehicles.
The air ambulance has departed from the scene after providing necessary medical assistance to those involved in the crash. However, the exact nature and extent of injuries sustained remain undisclosed at this time.
Surrey Police have been contacted for further information regarding the incident. Updates on the situation are anticipated as authorities work to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow in the affected area.
