The M2 coastbound remains closed between Junction 5 (Sittingbourne) and Junction 6 (Faversham) as accident investigation work continues after a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:10 PM on Wednesday, November 20, and emergency services, including Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and National Highways, have been on the scene throughout the night.
Investigation and Traffic Impact
The closure is expected to remain in place until at least midday today (November 21) to allow for extensive accident investigation work.
A police spokesperson stated:
Drivers are warned of significant delays on the M2 following a serious collision. The coastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for several hours, and motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and check for updates on the Highways website.”
One lane on the London-bound side of the M2 is also closed, causing congestion for over a mile near Junction 6.
Stranded Drivers and Diversion Details
Motorists caught in the closure experienced delays and sub-zero temperatures overnight. Traffic was eventually released from the rear of the queue, with all trapped vehicles cleared by 2:00 AM.
Drivers are being advised to use the following diversion, marked with the Solid Circle symbol:
Exit the M2 eastbound at Junction 5 and take the A249 southbound towards Maidstone.
Travel approximately five miles to join the M20 eastbound at Junction 7.
Exit the M20 at Junction 8, then take the A20 eastbound towards Lenham.
Continue on the A20 for nine miles, passing through Harrietsham and Lenham, to reach the A252 at Charing.
Take the A252 eastbound towards Challock, then the A251 northbound towards Faversham, rejoining the M2 at Junction 6.
