The incident occurred shortly after 4.12pm and has caused major delays, with traffic tailing back and motorists reporting waits of over an hour.
Emergency Response
According to Kent Police, officers were called to the scene following a collision between two cars, which also led to a vehicle fire. A woman has been taken to hospital for treatment, although the extent of her injuries has not yet been confirmed.
A large emergency presence was reported by drivers, with multiple police, ambulance and fire crews in attendance. An air ambulance also landed at the scene and was later seen heading toward London.
“The coastbound carriageway is currently closed,” a police spokesperson confirmed. “Officers, fire and ambulance crews remain at the scene.”
Traffic and Diversions
Drivers are facing long queues from J2 as the coastbound section remains shut. Vehicles are being diverted via the Medway Tunnel, which has since become heavily congested, with emergency vehicles stuck in traffic.
Images from the scene show the scale of the disruption, with stationary vehicles lined along the carriageway and queues now impacting roads in Strood and the surrounding Medway area.
Kent County Council Highways has urged drivers to avoid the area and expect delays as crews continue to work to clear the scene and carry out investigations.
What Drivers Should Do
-
Avoid the M2 coastbound between J2 and J3.
-
Allow extra time if travelling via the Medway Tunnel or surrounding routes.
This is a developing story. More updates will follow as details emerge.
