In a major traffic disruption, the M2 motorway has been shut down in both westbound and coastbound directions near Junction 5 (J5) due to a severe Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) fire. The closure comes in response to the seriousness of the incident and the potential hazards posed by the blaze.
The incident occurred earlier this afternoon, prompting authorities to take swift action to secure the safety of motorists and minimize the risk of further complications. As a result, traffic in both directions has been halted, causing significant congestion and disruption to travel plans.
The cause of the HGV fire has not yet been officially confirmed, but the severity of the situation necessitated the closure of both carriageways. The closure is expected to remain in effect until emergency services have fully assessed the situation, managed the fire, and cleared the area of potential hazards.
Motorists who were planning to use the M2 motorway in the affected area are advised to seek alternative routes and stay informed about the situation through official channels and traffic updates. Local authorities along with Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue, are working diligently to manage the incident and ensure the safety of all those involved.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: We are responding to a lorry fire on the M2 coast-bound near to Junction 5 for the A249 Sittingbourne.
Seven fire engines and a bulk water carrier are in attendance, and crews wearing breathing apparatus are using compressed air foam to extinguish the flames.
Both the coast-bound and London-bound carriageways have been closed while crews work at the scene, and drivers are warned to expect delays.
Please check for traffic updates before traveling towards the affected area.
