London Fire Brigade has issued a warning to the public as an amber wildfire alert is in effect across the capital ahead of an unseasonably warm stretch of weather.
With sunny skies and temperatures forecast to peak at 20°C on Friday, the brigade is urging Londoners to act responsibly to prevent grass and open land fires, which have become an increasing risk after a drier-than-usual spring.
Precautions Urged Amid Rising Fire Risk
The Met Office has issued an amber wildfire warning for London, in place throughout the week. The alert comes as fire services warn that just one small spark could cause devastating consequences, particularly in grassy or wooded areas.
Paul McCourt, Assistant Commissioner at London Fire Brigade, said:
“We want everyone to enjoy the sunshine but we urge people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and help prevent a grass fire from starting.”
“Recent events in Los Angeles and South Korea have demonstrated how rapidly fires can spread outdoors even when temperatures are not at their highest.”
McCourt advised that the use of disposable barbecues and open flames on balconies or in parks should be avoided. He also stressed the importance of disposing of cigarettes and rubbish properly, as both are common causes of accidental wildfires.
Simple Actions to Prevent Disaster
According to the fire brigade, wildfires can start with alarming ease. Dry grass, shrubs, and litter can ignite from something as small as a dropped match, and fires can spread rapidly in windy conditions.
Common causes of wildfires include:
- Cigarettes not fully extinguished
- Disposable barbecues left unattended or still hot
- Glass bottles magnifying sunlight
- Litter or rubbish acting as fuel
Working With Partners
The London Fire Brigade says it is working closely with local authorities and landowners to reduce the risk of fires and educate the public on safe behaviour during dry spells.
“We’re taking this warning seriously and ask the public to do the same,” said McCourt. “If everyone plays their part, we can reduce the risk of fires and keep people safe.”
A Message for the Weekend
With warm weather expected to draw crowds to parks, gardens, and open spaces this weekend, the brigade’s message is clear: enjoy the sunshine safely, but be fire aware.
Londoners are encouraged to follow updates from the Met Office and the London Fire Brigade’s official social media channels for the latest safety advice.
