GB News has officially severed ties with actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox following an internal investigation into on-air comments he made about female journalist Ava Evans, which garnered more than 8,000 Ofcom complaints. The broadcaster also terminated its relationship with presenter Calvin Robinson, who had initially been suspended for supporting Fox.
The disciplinary hearing for Fox unfolded after he made a series of personal remarks about political correspondent Ava Evans, including an inappropriate question about her. The broadcaster stated, “Laurence Fox and Calvin Robinson were both suspended last week pending internal investigations that have now concluded. As of today, GB News has ended its employment relationship with Laurence Fox and Calvin Robinson.”
The fallout extended to another presenter, Dan Wootton, who has also been suspended by GB News amid internal investigations and an Ofcom probe. The media watchdog received a total of 8,846 complaints about an episode of Wootton’s show on September 26. Wootton has since apologized.
GB News boss Angelos Frangopoulos expressed his dismay over the remarks, stating that they were not in line with the channel’s values. MailOnline, where Wootton served as a columnist, announced the termination of his contract following the controversial broadcast.
Notably, Laurence Fox’s removal from GB News coincides with reports of his arrest following a police search of his Stockwell residence in south London on Wednesday morning. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest, stating, “He was arrested in Stockwell and has been taken to a South London police station where he remains in custody.” The arrest relates to suspicions of conspiring to commit criminal damage to ULEZ cameras and encouraging or assisting offenses.
The unfolding events cast a shadow over GB News, prompting internal investigations and terminations as the broadcaster takes decisive actions in response to the controversies surrounding its presenters.
