The shocking murder of a young Thai woman, Kamonnan Thiamphanit, in a £4 million luxury mansion near Hyde Park has sent shockwaves through London. During an inquest held today, it was revealed that the prime suspect in the case is believed to have fled the country.
Thiamphanit, known as Angela, was discovered dead last week in the former Ethiopian embassy building, where she was a tenant. Neighbors reported hearing screams before the grim discovery.
Authorities have been operating under the theory that Thiamphanit likely knew her attacker, as there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment in Bayswater, west London.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, speaking at the inquest held remotely by Westminster Coroner’s Court, stated, “Angela, which is what she was known as while here in the UK, had been renting out the property as an Airbnb. We believe that the person who attacked her was known to her.”
While the police have a named individual as the prime suspect, they suspect he has fled the country. DCI Foxwell mentioned, “We are currently seeking the perpetrator but cannot give much more information about that at this stage.”
Thiamphanit, described as working in property, was identified through fingerprints from immigration records, and her family in Thailand has been notified of her tragic death. The cause of death was determined to be multiple stab wounds.
The mansion, located just moments away from Hyde Park, is equipped with security features including video camera entry, which police have utilized in their investigation.
The Metropolitan Police has come under scrutiny after it was revealed they were made aware of concerns for Thiamphanit’s welfare the night before her body was discovered but did not locate her until the following morning.
Fiona Wilcox, the coroner, conveyed her condolences to Thiamphanit’s family in Thailand and released her body for burial.
As the investigation continues, the community remains shocked by the brutal crime that unfolded in the heart of one of London’s most affluent neighbourhoods.
