Authorities have confirmed that investigations are continuing into the devastating fire at Bicester Heritage, which claimed the lives of three people, including two firefighters and a member of the public. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 15 May, has been described as one of the most tragic in recent fire service history.
Scene Still Unstable as Fire Hotspots Persist
Crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene, though entry into the structure is currently unsafe due to remaining fire hotspots. Fire investigators and Thames Valley Police are continuing efforts to determine what caused the blaze at the Bicester Motion site.
The Major Crime Team is leading the case as an unexplained death investigation. At this stage, it is not a criminal investigation, but police have stressed that they will follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Victims Identified and Support in Place
Police have formally identified the victims as:
- Jennie Logan, 30, firefighter with Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service
- Martyn Sadler, 38, firefighter serving with both Oxfordshire Fire and the London Fire Brigade
- David Chester, 57, a member of the public from Bicester
Two other firefighters injured in the blaze remain in hospital in stable condition, and are receiving continued support from both the fire service and specialist police officers.
“Our thoughts remain with all those involved following this tragic incident,” said Assistant Chief Constable Tim Metcalfe of Thames Valley Police.
Complex Investigation Underway
Authorities have reiterated that the investigation will take time, given the scale and complexity of the scene. Police and fire investigators will not speculate on the cause of the fire or the specific sequence of events that led to the fatalities and injuries.
“Our enquiries are ongoing, but this is a complex investigation which may take some time,” ACC Metcalfe added.
The investigation is being supported by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and relevant health and safety bodies.
Community and National Impact
The tragedy has sparked a wave of tributes across the country, with floral memorials outside Bicester Fire Station and messages of condolence from fellow emergency services, government leaders, and the public. A book of condolence has been opened at St Edburg’s Church, where a service of reflection will also be held.
The fire is one of the deadliest firefighter incidents in the UK since 2023, underscoring the risks emergency responders face in the line of duty.
What’s Next
- Investigators will gain access to the interior of the site once it is deemed safe.
