Authorities have launched an investigation after a huge fire broke out at an allotment in Crawcrook, Gateshead on Monday night.
Emergency Response
Emergency services, including Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), were called to the scene shortly after 9pm on March 4 after reports of a large blaze.
Firefighters worked to bring the flames under control, while police secured the area to ensure public safety. It is not yet known what caused the fire, and investigations are now underway to determine whether it was started deliberately.
Eyewitness Accounts
Local residents reported seeing huge flames and thick black smoke rising from the site, with some hearing loud bangs as the fire took hold.
One resident, who lives nearby, said:
“It was terrifying to see the fire spread so quickly. The sky was glowing orange, and we could smell the smoke from our homes.”
Investigation Ongoing
A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that multiple fire crews attended the incident and worked to prevent further spread. They added:
“An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and we are working closely with Northumbria Police to establish the circumstances.
Authorities have urged anyone with information or who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
