Shoeburyness residents may have noticed an increased police presence in Gunners Park, Essex after a woman reported a sexual assault on Tuesday morning. Officers were called to the park at approximately 10am on October 17 following reports of the assault.
The victim, who was walking her dog, was approached by a man who engaged in a brief conversation before grabbing her arms and sexually assaulting her. The victim is currently receiving support from specialist officers, and the police are actively investigating the incident.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but officers are conducting inquiries in the local area. The increased police presence in the park is not due to a perceived wider danger to the public, but rather an opportunity for residents to address any concerns they may have with the officers present.
Chief Inspector Jo Collins, District Commander for Southend, emphasised that incidents like these are rare and that the investigation teams are working diligently to identify the suspect. She stated, “I totally appreciate that this incident has concerned residents.” She further urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The suspect is described as a white man, approximately 5’8″ tall, with short, white thinning hair. He is believed to be in his late 50s and was seen wearing a blue coat or mac during the incident.
