Police have launched an urgent appeal for information after a human placenta was discovered abandoned in Werneth Park, Oldham, on Friday afternoon. The discovery prompted the park’s closure while officers and forensic teams carried out investigations.
Medical experts who examined the placenta believe the birth likely occurred within the past 24 hours, raising concerns that the mother or baby may require medical assistance.
Detective Inspector Andy Day from Greater Manchester Police stated:
“It’s possible that mum or baby are, or could be, in need of medical attention. We have several enquiries underway to try and identify who the placenta belongs to, including searching various UK databases and liaising with a number of partner agencies.”
DI Day also appealed to the public for help, saying:
“I’m appealing to anyone who either knows the identity of mum or baby, or indeed mum herself, to come forward to us so we can ensure they are doing okay. I’d also appeal for anyone who has seen anything around the Werneth Park area over the last 24 hours that might assist our enquiries to reach out.”
Community Reassurance
Authorities have stressed that there is no risk to the wider community, and officers will remain in the area for the foreseeable future to provide reassurance and listen to any concerns from residents.
The discovery of the placenta has caused understandable concern among the local community, and officers are grateful for the cooperation shown by residents during the park’s temporary closure.
DI Day added:
“We appreciate the cooperation of those living locally, as we understand the impact of closing public spaces that are there to be enjoyed on a weekend.”
Police are urging anyone with information or who may have seen something unusual in Werneth Park in the past 24 hours to contact them immediately.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
