A massive fire has engulfed a block of flats at Park View Court in South Shore, Blackpool, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. The smoke has been reported visible from nearly 40 miles away, with witnesses as far as Southport describing the dramatic sight.
The blaze broke out shortly after 3 pm on Thursday (March 27), prompting a significant response from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. Four fire engines from South Shore, Bispham, St Annes, and Blackpool, as well as an aerial ladder platform from Blackpool, were dispatched to the scene to battle the flames.
Footage captured at the scene showed large plumes of black smoke pouring from the building as flames tore through the roof. Residents and passersby expressed shock as the fire raged, with some evacuating the area for safety.
Lancashire Constabulary quickly moved to close Highfield Road in both directions while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control. In a social media post, Blackpool Police urged people to avoid the area due to heavy traffic and road closures. They stated:
Just to make you aware, we’re assisting Lancashire Fire and Rescue who are currently dealing with a fire on Highfield Road, and due to this, there is a large amount of traffic building up in the area, especially with the schools finishing. Highfield Road is closed at both ends and so we’re asking that you please avoid the immediate and surrounding area until we’re happy that it’s safe for you to travel.
Authorities also warned that traffic congestion was likely to affect nearby areas as drivers sought alternative routes. People were advised to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time for travel.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and investigations are ongoing. There have been no reports of injuries at this stage, but firefighters are continuing to assess the situation and monitor any potential risks.
Local residents were advised to stay indoors if affected by the smoke and follow instructions from emergency personnel. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
