David Hornby, a heartless robber, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with an additional three years on extended licence, following a terrifying ordeal he subjected a 76-year-old woman to in her Norton home.
The horrifying incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 2, when Hornby, aged 40, forcibly entered the victim’s residence on Japonica Way while she was asleep. Startled by the disturbance, the elderly woman went to investigate, only to be confronted by Hornby, who proceeded to assault her.
In an act of shocking callousness, Hornby bound the arms and legs of the elderly victim, made numerous threats of violence, and pilfered various items, including her bank card. He callously left her tied up for over two hours, inflicting both physical and emotional trauma on the helpless victim.
In a victim impact statement, the courageous survivor shared the harrowing details of her experience, expressing feelings of violation and imprisonment within her own home. She conveyed her gratitude for the support she received from her community, which played a crucial role in helping her navigate through this dark period. Determined to reclaim her life, she pledged to live it to the fullest.
The investigation of this heinous crime was led by detectives from Stockton and Middlesbrough CID, in collaboration with Crime Scene Officers. David Hornby was swiftly identified, arrested, and charged the day following the incident. On August 1st, he appeared before Teesside Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to charges of robbery, false imprisonment, and two counts of fraud by false representation. The sentencing occurred on October 27.
Detective Chief Inspector Chatterton, the Senior Investigating Officer, described this case as one of the most distressing he has encountered throughout his career. He emphasized the immense pressure and fear that the victim endured as Hornby callously helped himself to her belongings and financial savings. Moreover, Hornby’s repeated returns to the scene of the crime only served to exacerbate the victim’s terror as she remained bound and helpless.
Chatterton commended the victim for her remarkable resilience and bravery, along with the unwavering support of her local community. He expressed pride in the diligent efforts of his investigative team in ensuring that this dangerous offender was brought to justice. Chatterton further emphasized that such despicable behaviour would not be tolerated, and the sentencing sends a clear message that justice will be served in cases of this nature.
