A man has been charged with multiple violent offences after a disturbing confrontation with police in Crawley left three officers injured.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30pm on Saturday, 31 May 2025, when Sussex Police officers attempted to arrest a suspect at a property on Gossops Drive in the Gossops Green area. According to the force, the man became violent and assaulted the officers during the attempted arrest.
Suspect Charged with GBH, ABH, and Non-Fatal Strangulation
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Mohammed Rasool, reportedly fled into a nearby property following the assault but was swiftly apprehended by police. He has now been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of actual bodily harm (ABH), and two counts of non-fatal strangulation.
Rasool has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2 June 2025.
All three injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.
Senior Police Praise Officers’ Bravery
Superintendent Steve Biglands of Sussex Police condemned the violence and praised the courage shown by the officers.
“My colleagues put their own safety at risk to protect the people of Sussex, and they will continue to receive the full support of Sussex Police,” he said.
“Police officers are human beings, and being assaulted while they carry out their duties should never be seen as ‘part of the job’. It is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The road was cordoned off for several hours while emergency services dealt with the scene.
Community Reaction and Legal Implications
The incident has sparked renewed discussion around police safety and the legal consequences for assaults against emergency workers, an issue that has seen increased scrutiny in recent years.
Local authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to prosecuting violent offenders to the fullest extent of the law and ensuring injured officers receive full care and support.
