Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched an investigation following reports of a man exposing himself along the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal in Astley on Friday, 28 March 2025.
Heightened Patrols and Community Safety Measures
In response to the incident, GMP has increased security along the popular waterway with both high-visibility and covert patrols. The intensified presence aims to deter further incidents and reassure the community.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Paul Bodley, who is leading the response, stated:
“In response to these reports, both high-visibility and covert patrols have been deployed in the area to detect any suspicious activity, and these will remain in place.”
Authorities are determined to not only catch the suspect but also restore a sense of safety among residents and those who use the canal for recreation or commuting.
Ongoing Investigation and Historical Context
This latest incident echoes previous reports from July 2023, when images of a man linked to similar behaviour circulated online. GMP confirmed that they are reviewing these historical cases as part of the current investigation. However, they have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified images on social media, as this could undermine police efforts.
Public Assistance Needed
GMP is appealing directly to the community for information. Despite an increase in social media posts discussing the incident, many have not been formally reported to the authorities. Sgt. Bodley emphasized the importance of direct communication:
“We are aware that anonymous reports and posts have been circulated on social media but not formally reported to GMP. We urge anyone with information—whether they’ve witnessed an incident or been affected—to contact GMP directly.”
Residents are encouraged to report sightings or any suspicious behaviour to GMP via 101, quoting log 0932-280325. Alternatively, those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Community Reaction
The incident has sparked concerns among locals who frequently use the towpath. Some have expressed unease about returning to the canal, while others have praised the increased police presence. Social media discussions have been active, with some users criticizing the initial lack of information.
Local councillor Lisa Reynolds commented:
“It’s vital that residents feel safe while using the towpath, and I appreciate the police’s proactive measures. I urge everyone to report any incidents directly to the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.”
Staying Vigilant
Police are reminding the public to stay alert when using the canal paths, especially during quieter hours. While authorities are working hard to identify the suspect, community support remains crucial.
Anyone with information, or who has been affected by the incident, is encouraged to speak with officers patrolling the area or use the official reporting channels.
GMP assures residents that the investigation will continue as long as necessary, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
