A 40-year-old woman has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison after being caught attempting to meet who she believed was a teenage girl.
Katie Birtles, of Wroxall Drive in Grantham, appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on 19 May 2025, where she was jailed for four years and eight months following an investigation by Lincolnshire Police.
Police were alerted after receiving a report that Birtles intended to meet with a 14-year-old girl, with whom she had been engaging in sexual communication. It was later revealed that the “teen” was not real but part of a proactive investigation designed to catch potential offenders.
Charges and Sentence
Birtles pleaded guilty to the following offences:
- One count of engaging in sexual communication with a child
- One count of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence
- Two counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO)
The court heard that Birtles was already subject to a SHPO, imposed due to previous offences, but had violated its terms by initiating online contact believed to be with a minor and arranging a meeting for sexual purposes.
Police Statement
A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said:
“This sentence reflects the serious nature of Birtles’ actions and the danger she posed to children. Sexual Harm Prevention Orders are put in place to protect the public and breaching them is a significant offence. We are committed to bringing those who seek to exploit children to justice.”
