Go North East, the largest bus operator in the region, has possibly negotiated with union representatives, preventing a potential 12-week strike set to begin on October 28. The breakthrough in talks positions Go North East’s bus drivers as the highest-paid in the region.
In a landmark offer, hourly rates for drivers are set to reach £14.15, resulting in an annual pay increase of almost £2,700 for those working standard hours—a 10.3% jump. Overtime workers could see raises exceeding £3,000 per year.
Despite reporting losses of £4.3 million in its recent accounts, company bosses have committed to an inflation-busting pay proposal. If accepted, drivers will also enjoy a guaranteed above-inflation pay increase next year.
Ben Maxfield, Go North East’s business director, expressed relief at the potential end of strike action. He emphasised the collaborative effort with the union in fine-tuning pay proposals, proudly stating that the move would position their drivers at the top of the earnings league in the North East.
Maxfield concluded, urging all employees to support the deal for the benefit of both staff and passengers which will be voted on at noon on Friday.
