A Gateshead man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of a schoolgirl, following a harrowing investigation by Northumbria Police.
Kenneth Dick, 66, of Ryde Terrace, Dunston, was found guilty of subjecting the young victim to a series of horrific and degrading acts, including forcing her to perform sexual acts. In addition to his custodial sentence, Dick will serve an extra year on licence following his release and has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
A Case Built on Courage
The abuse came to light in June 2021 when the survivor found the strength to confide in a family member, prompting an immediate referral to police. Northumbria Police launched a full investigation, which led to Dick’s arrest and interview.
Despite initially denying all wrongdoing, a comprehensive investigation and substantial evidence led to Dick being formally charged in March 2023. He faced four charges, including:
- Rape
- Sexual assault
- Engaging in sexual activity with a child
- Causing a child to watch a sexual act
Following a trial and conviction, Dick was sentenced this morning at court, where he was also handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order to protect the survivor from further harm.
Police Praise Survivor’s Bravery
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said:
“We would like to praise the survivor in this case for the courage and composure she has shown throughout this investigation and the criminal proceedings.
It is thanks to her bravery that a dangerous offender like Dick is now behind bars and unable to harm anyone else.”
Why This Matters
The case highlights the ongoing devastation caused by child sexual abuse and the importance of supporting survivors in speaking out. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that reports of child sexual abuse in the UK have risen by 15% over the past five years, a reflection of increasing awareness and reporting.
However, experts warn that many cases still go unreported, with stigma, fear, and trauma acting as barriers to justice.
A Step Toward Justice — But More Work Ahead
While this sentencing represents a victory for justice, concerns remain over low conviction rates for rape and sexual offences. A 2024 Home Office report revealed that the rape conviction rate in England and Wales is around 2%, underscoring the difficulties many victims face in seeing justice served.
Northumbria Police added:
“We hope this conviction serves as a stark warning to those who think they can take advantage of a vulnerable person. We won’t tolerate this type of behaviour, and there are serious and lifelong consequences.”
Support and Safeguarding
Dick will be subject to strict monitoring conditions during his post-release licence period, and his lifelong SHPO will limit his ability to reoffend.
Meanwhile, support for survivors continues to grow. Organisations such as Barnardo’s, NSPCC, and Victim Support work alongside police to offer counselling, advocacy, and safeguarding services.
