Groundswell, a charity committed to addressing health inequality, has launched a campaign during Diabetes Awareness Week (June 10-16) to assist people experiencing homelessness in managing long-term health conditions, including diabetes. The campaign aims to provide support regardless of an individual’s circumstances.
To mark the campaign’s launch, Groundswell hosted a conversation between actor Gethin Anthony (Game of Thrones, Aquarius, Warhol) and Homeless Health Caseworker Mark Leonard. The discussion centred around homelessness, health, and their shared experiences with diabetes.
Mark Leonard, a member of Groundswell’s Homeless Health Peer Advocacy (HHPA) team, recounted a poignant encounter with a rough sleeper who had type 1 diabetes. The man stored his insulin in a local canal in Camden to keep it cold. Thanks to Groundswell’s intervention, he now has stable accommodation and access to a refrigerator for his insulin.
Groundswell’s HHPA team in London has achieved significant milestones in the past year:
- Supported over 500 homeless individuals in managing their health more effectively.
- Facilitated more than 2,300 crucial health appointments.
- Organised 280 health events at hostels and day centres.
Actor Gethin Anthony emphasised the importance of accessible healthcare, especially for those facing homelessness. He praised Groundswell’s life-saving work and encouraged donations to support their efforts.
Michael Chandler, Groundswell CEO, highlighted the urgent need to address preventable illnesses and conditions among homeless populations, with diabetes being a critical concern. He emphasised that homelessness is fundamentally a health issue, and reversing this trend is essential for ensuring everyone’s right to good health.
