A former youth football coach, Lee Murray, has been sentenced to five years in prison following his conviction for the rape and sexual assault of a young girl in the Inverness area. Murray, 53, was found guilty of committing these crimes in his car between January 2021 and October 2022.
The sentencing took place on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the High Court in Inverness. Murray’s conviction has sent shockwaves through the local community, where he once held a position of trust as a youth football coach.
Detective Inspector Craig Thomson, who led the investigation, emphasized the severity of Murray’s betrayal, stating, “Lee Murray was in a position of trust in the community when he targeted his young victim and subjected her to horrific sexual abuse.
DI Thomson also stressed the importance of the outcome, adding, “I hope this outcome sends a clear message to perpetrators who prey on and abuse children that we will thoroughly investigate all reports and ensure you face justice.
Police Scotland have urged anyone with concerns or knowledge of similar offences to come forward. We encourage anyone who has been a victim of this type of crime or has concerns to contact Police Scotland at 101,” DI Thomson stated.
This case has raised awareness about child sexual abuse within sports and other youth-oriented activities, reminding the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behaviour.
