Five people have been injured in a stabbing attack in central Amsterdam this afternoon, prompting a swift emergency response and the arrest of the suspected attacker.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:20pm local time on Sint Nicolaasstraat, a street just steps away from the bustling Dam Square, one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations.
According to eyewitness reports, the violence began when an elderly woman and a young girl were both stabbed in the back. The motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage.
Dutch police have confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody. Authorities have yet to release the individual’s identity or provide further details regarding the nature of the attack.
All five victims are receiving medical treatment, but their conditions have not yet been publicly confirmed. Emergency services, including multiple ambulances and police units, arrived at the scene within minutes.
Footage shared on social media shows a heavy police presence near the site, with parts of the street cordoned off as investigators examine the area.
Authorities are urging witnesses to come forward as investigations continue. A spokesperson for the Amsterdam Police said:
“We understand this incident has caused concern, especially in such a central location. At this stage, we are not ruling anything out and are working quickly to establish the full circumstances.”
Dam Square remains busy with both locals and tourists, and police have assured the public there is no ongoing threat.
