The woman who tragically died in a fatal collision involving a van near The Strand in Aldwych has been named as 20-year-old Aalia Mahomed, as her heartbroken family paid tribute to her memory.
Emergency services were called at 11:41am on Tuesday, 18 March, to the scene of the incident, which occurred close to King’s College London’s campus, following reports of a van colliding with pedestrians.
Despite the best efforts of first responders, Aalia was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
In a moving statement released today, Aalia’s family described her as a “bright, kind and beautiful soul” who brought joy to everyone she met.
“Aalia was a bright, kind and beautiful soul, who brought joy and laughter to everyone. She was a ray of sunshine in our lives, and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Her light will always live on in our memories and her smile will be our strength as we get through this difficult time.”
A photograph of Aalia was also released by her loved ones, who have asked for privacy as they grieve.
Two other people were also injured in the collision. A 27-year-old woman remains in hospital in a serious condition, though her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. A 23-year-old man was also treated in hospital and has since been discharged.
The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was further arrested while in custody on suspicion of drug driving offences. He has since been bailed with conditions while investigations continue.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and any available footage to assist with the investigation.
