The FBI has identified the suspect behind the devastating New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas. The incident, which is being investigated as an “act of terrorism,” left at least 10 people dead and more than 35 others injured.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. local time, when Jabbar drove a Ford pick-up truck into crowds of New Year’s revelers on a busy street in the city’s French Quarter. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the vehicle ploughed through the packed area, striking dozens.
Following the attack, Jabbar exited the vehicle and engaged in a firefight with law enforcement before being killed by police at the scene.
FBI Investigation
According to a statement released by the FBI, Jabbar’s vehicle contained an ISIS flag, along with weapons and an improvised explosive device (IED). Additional potential IEDs were discovered in the French Quarter.
“The FBI’s Special Agent Bomb Technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine the viability of these devices and render them safe,” the agency said.
Authorities are also investigating Jabbar’s potential affiliations with ISIS and other terrorist organizations. The pick-up truck used in the attack appears to have been rented, and the FBI is working to determine how Jabbar acquired it.
Reactions from Leaders
President Joe Biden condemned the attack, calling it “an act of pure evil.” He expressed his support for New Orleans and pledged federal resources to assist with the investigation and recovery efforts.
President-elect Donald Trump also weighed in, describing the attack as “another tragic example of the dangers of terrorism” and calling for stricter immigration and national security policies.
Impact and Response
The French Quarter remains cordoned off as bomb squads and forensic teams continue their work. A news conference later today is expected to address concerns over security barriers and the measures in place to prevent such attacks.
US correspondent James Matthews noted the “horrific” nature of injuries sustained by victims and suggested the fatality count could rise as more information becomes available.
Community in Mourning
The attack has left New Orleans residents in shock, with many mourning the loss of life and expressing concerns about safety in the wake of the incident.
