Four fire engines and approximately 30 firefighters were dispatched to the Riverside Shopping Centre on Bexley Road shortly after 6 a.m. on Saturday morning after it was suspected that a smouldering cable ignited items within a retail unit.
Security personnel on-site notified the London Fire Briaiadge that a fire had broken out at Subway, and the service responded by sending four fire engines and a Command unit to extinguish the flames.
Crews used two hose reels and acted quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring units. A portion of the retail has been severely damaged by fire.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched, with specialists from the LFB fire investigation team called in to lead the investigation.
Residents in the area were evacuated due to the smoke, but no injuries were reported.
More to come.
