In a harrowing act of vengeance, 57-year-old Martin Breeze and his son, 29-year-old Shaun Breeze, have been found guilty in a fatal attack that claimed the life of 60-year-old Brian Derby. The incident, which occurred in Ingleby Barwick, Teesside, unfolded when Martin, fueled by drugs and alcohol, deliberately drove his Citroen Berlingo into a group of people, killing Mr Derby.
The attack on February 2 was sparked by a phone call from Shaun to his father after a disagreement at a local bar escalated. Martin Breeze, under the influence and seeking revenge for his son, then drove the vehicle recklessly, carrying Mr. Derby on the bonnet for 150 meters before veering off the road. Despite Martin’s claims of losing control due to intoxication, the court convicted him of murder and four counts of attempted murder, reflecting the deliberate nature of his actions.
Shaun Breeze, who had earlier fled a confrontation on his bike, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm, highlighting his involvement in the tragic sequence of events that night.
Teesside Crown Court heard the chilling details of how the father and son duo not only committed the act but also attempted to cover it up by abandoning the van and returning to their shared home. Their actions have left a community in mourning and a family grappling with the loss of a beloved grandfather and friend.
Mr Justice Jacobs has set the sentencing for both men on August 2, where they will face the consequences of their actions. The local police and the community have rallied around Mr Derby’s family, offering support and condolences during this profoundly difficult time.
