Specialised officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are urgently seeking additional information following a tragic road traffic collision on Ormskirk Road in Wigan. The incident occurred at the junction with Billinge Road around 7:15pm on Saturday, April 13, 2024.
According to initial reports, a Peugeot 408 collided with a Suzuki GSR750 motorbike, which was carrying both a rider and a passenger. The impact caused both individuals to be unseated, resulting in serious injuries.
Fatalities at the Scene:
- 21-Year-Old Man: Emergency services confirmed that a young man, aged 21, tragically lost his life at the scene due to the severity of the collision.
- 56-Year-Old Man: Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the second individual, a 56-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries a short time later while in hospital.
The driver of the Peugeot, a 41-year-old man, has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. Authorities continue to question him as part of their ongoing investigation.
PC Philip Drummond, leading the investigation, expressed his condolences: “This is another extremely upsetting and tragic collision that has occurred in recent days in Wigan. Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of the victims. We urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has access to doorbell or dash-cam CCTV footage to come forward.
